“Our story begins on a Sunday afternoon, just between Halfway Tree and Spanish Town, where a young boy, not yet the cock of the walk that he would soon become, was lying on the grass and taking in the sweet and sensuous scent of Hibiscus that languidly lilted along the summer breeze. It was at this precise moment that he saw her. Her walk was soft and delicate with a thaumaturgical touch that only a rabbis daughter could have. Before their eyes had even met, her luminous lips had already lured him in. Salvation winked with the promise of a Bris held at pinnacle and a congregation of sages bunny hopping and chicken dancing to Yiddish Mento. Then their eyes linked, an aeon blinked, Amharic vows were scryed upon their hearts. Just to think, this could be with the frenectomy and a few words of love”.

Luisa Casati (1881-1957) was the ultimate female dandy. Notorious and eccentric, she fuelled the creative fires of artists and influential literary figures including Robert de Montesquiou, Romain de Tirtoff (Erté), Jean Cocteau, and Cecil Beaton. She lived at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on Venice’s Grand Canal between 1910-19, an arrangement which eventually lead to a fruitful client relationship with Fortuny, who had already established his presence in the city by this time. Vincent Gallo’s (b. 1962) contact page is quite novel: “If you’d like to send a nude photo of yourself and you were born a female, please do so. I would be happy, though, with a simple photo of your face. It is nice to see the face of someone who writes me. I will only accept JPEG attachments”. It gets better: “Warning: To all bitter or jealous or unemployed or frustrated or mean or nasty or under-loved or under-paid or under-hung men and butchy girls. Think before you write to me. Think how small and silly you appear when angry, jealous and bitter; writing to me like a scorned fan”. Picture - via L’odyssée du cinéma.

Gerald D is a hairstylist living in a bohemian love dungeon. He moved to New York in September 1984 to apprentice for Marc Pipino (1954-2008) before branching into the freelance arena four years later. He’s since fruitfully collaborated with Bruce Weber (Let’s get lost, 1988), Elisa Jimenez and, more recently, Doug Aitken (Sleepwalkers, 2007). Pictures (from bottom) - Gerald at home by Todd Selby.
